Yesterday’s horrific suicide blast at the Khadija Tul Kubra mosque in the Tarlai Kalan area of Islamabad — a sacred place of worship for our brothers and sisters — has left our hearts heavy with grief and our spirits tested. At least 31 worshippers were killed and more than 169 injured during Friday prayers, making this one of the deadliest attacks in the Pakistan capital in recent memory.
The brutal targeting of a mosque — a sanctuary of peace — is not only a tragedy for Pakistan but a tragedy for the entire Muslim Ummah.
Understanding the Context
This attack occurred against a backdrop of increasing militant violence in the region. Militants associated with extremist ideologies continue to exploit geopolitical tensions, sectarian divides, and socio-economic instability to further their destructive agendas.
Moreover, the political landscape in South Asia risks deepening divisions if we allow our grief to be manipulated for politics or blame. This moment demands a response centered on unity, compassion, and strategic action — not fragmentation.
Unity in the Muslim Ummah: A Moral Imperative
The Qur’an repeatedly urges believers to stand united:
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided…” (Surah Al-‘Imran 3:103)
To be divided among sects — Sunni, Shia, or any group — is precisely what evil forces want. History shows that fragmentation weakens communities, makes them vulnerable to external manipulation, and distracts from our shared mission of justice, compassion, and the preservation of human life.
How We Must Respond
- Reject Sectarianism and Stand as One: This was an attack on humanity and on Islam itself. We must not let it be narrated as a Sunni vs Shia issue.
- Promote Collective Mourning and Healing: Organize joint vigils and communal support for the families of the victims.
- Advocate Peace and Protection for All Worshippers: Call on leaders to strengthen protection for places of worship without discrimination.
- Counter Extremism Through Education: Invest in education that fosters critical thinking, tolerance, and respect.
- Reaffirm Shared Identity: Our shared love of Allah and commitment to the Sunnah must outweigh all secondary differences.
